Eye Diseases and Surgeries

The eye is the part of the human body that should be looked after cautiously. As it is an organ that will get weak and more disease prone with age, there should be adequate care and awareness of the eye, the various diseases it is prone to, the treatments and the clinics best for eye care.

Anatomy of the Eye:

The eye helps us see by letting the light carry into the eye and turning it into an electrical signal which, then, is carried into the brain through optic nerves at the back of the eye. The main parts of the eye are the sclera, cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina and optic nerves. Each part allows the light to enter the inside of the eye, where the retina and the optic nerves lie.

The light is filtered and controlled as it comes in by the front layers of the eye; cornea, iris and pupil. The retina then turns the light into signals, and the optic nerves take it into the brain. The image is inverted in the back of the eye, but the brain makes it right. Sort of how the convex mirror works; the eye works similarly.

Damages to any of these parts can turn into a serious illness.

  1. Eye Illnesses
  • Retina issues

Retinopathy refers to diseases that can affect the retina. It can develop slowly, and damage can turn into partial or complete vision loss. There can be two types of retinopathies;

  • Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is mainly caused by diabetes, with type 1 or type 2. People who have diabetes are more prone to retinopathy, which can be proliferative or non-proliferative retinopathy. The first is when blood vessels build-up, and the second is when the blood vessels deteriorate, swell or break. Both can cause impairment of vision.

  • Retinopathy of prematurity

Found in premature babies, where the retina does not have the time to grow, ROP can lead to retinal detachment and blindness.

  • Hypertensive retinopathy

Cardiovascular diseases cause retinopathy. High blood pressure is the main cause of this, which leads to damage or blockage in the blood vessels.

  • Central serous retinopathy

This is a case which is not understood well. Fluid fills up and causes separation in the layers of the retina and causes blurriness and visual impairment.

  1. Cataract

A very common eye disease most commonly due to genetics and old age, cataract is when there is a blur in the middle of the vision. Cloudy vision is the most telling symptom.

  1. Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition that affects the optic nerves. Any damage or disorders in the optic nerve can lead to vision problems.

When to See the Doctor?

  • Large floaters in the vision
